Astronauts Facts

Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space on June 16th, 1963. She orbited the Earth 48 times in three days and is the only woman to have completed a solo space mission.

As part of their training, astronauts must become familiar with the smell of space. The fragrance expert who recreated the scent says space smells like “gunpowder, seared steak, raspberries and rum”.

Sergei Krikalev, a Russian cosmonaut, has spent 879 days in space which is the longest of any human. Due to the effects of relativity, this also makes him the most prolific time-traveller, with his body running 0.02 seconds behind the rest of the world.

Footprints of astronauts who landed on the moon should last at least 10 million years since the moon has no atmosphere.
