Time Facts

Because of velocity time dilation, people living in Longyearbyen (near the North pole) experience the equivalent of one extra second every 25 thousand years compared to people living in Ecuador (near the equator, which has to spin faster to complete a full rotation).

A galactic year is the time it takes the Sun to orbit the centre of the Milky Way (about 230 million years). Using that time scale, the mass extinction event which killed off the dinosaurs happened just over three months ago.

Earth’s core is about 2.5 years younger than its crust. Due to gravity, time moves more slowly at the core than on the surface.
